Organization of the Department

                                    ORGANISATION

ð  The postal department is under the administrative control of the director general of posts, New Delhi.

ð  The Directorate General functions as the Chairman of the postal board and secretary of the department.

ð  First post office started from 01.04.1854.

ð  The          Postal    Service Board,   the         apex      management     body      of            the Department, comprises the Chairman and six Members.

One base circle named as “ARMY POSTAL SERVICE” corps for providing postal services to armed forces functioning at New Delhi.  Is controlled by “Addl. Director General, APS, New Delhi”.

In each circle there are a number of postal divisions under the charge of senior superintendents or superintendents of post offices who directly control the working of all the post offices under their jurisdiction.

The RMS (Railway mail service) offices and sections are similarly controlled by the senior superintendents or superintendents RMS in each circle. 

ð  One Base Circle named as ARMY POSTAL SERVICE CORPS for providing postal services to armed forces functioning at NEW DELHI.

ð  He is assisted by Deputy Director General, Army Postal Service (in the rank of Brigadier) at Army Head Quartes.

ð  The two Command Based Post Offices at Delhi and Kolkata and Army Postal Service Centre at Kamptee Nagpur are commanded by Commandants in the rank of Colonel. The Officers Commanding Corps/Divisional/Area/Border Roads/Assam Rifles/Air Force Postal Units in the rank of Lt ColMajor/Captain monitor the functioning of Field Post Offices under their control and discharge the functions of the Postal Advisor to the General-Officer-Commanding. Two Central Base Post Offices and Section Base Post Offices serve as the nodal points for mail processing.

ð  The purpose of base circle is to cater the postal communication needs to armed forces.

ð  Army Postal Service provides PostalRemittance, Savings &  Insurance services to ArmyIndian NavyAir Force and Paramilitary forces personnel through 500 Field Post Offices established across the country. It also provides cover to Indian troops deployed with United Nations Peace Keeping Forces abroad.

ð  Previously Money Orders and VP articles were not booked to Army Post Offices. Now they are booked to Army Post Offices.
