TYPES OF POST OFFICES
Post offices are divided into three classes
A. Head post offices,
B. Sub post offices including ED sub post offices,
C. Branch post offices.
First two classes of post offices are normally transact all types of postal business, In branch post offices are done delivery and booking of mails, All type of savings schemes deposits and withdrawals, issue and payment of money orders.
So for as the public is concerned, there is generally no difference in the character of the service rendered by Sub-Post Offices and Head Post Offices except in regard to a few P.O. Savings Bank transactions.
Head post offices in important cities are in charge of gazetted officers, such offices are called First class head office, first class head postmaster exercise all the powers of superintendent of post offices in regard to their own offices.
NIGHT POST OFFICES
o The working hours of night post offices are generally fixed by head of the circle.
o Director General may extend the working hours upto 8.30 PM and keep them open Sunday also.
o These offices will transact those transactions which have been authorized by the Director General of posts.
o During the extended hours, these post offices will generally book registered articles including V.P. articles, sell IPOs and postage stamps.
o Deposits into Savings Bank Account and sale of cash certificates will be available upto 7.00 p.m. on week days only.
o Sundays and national holidays as well as other PO holidays, these offices function and observed restricted working hours 10.00 to 17.00 hrs. The delivery, payment of money orders and savings banks and certificates are also suspended on these days.
MOBILE POST OFFICES
ð Mobile Post Offices provide the facility of late posting in the different areas of the cities at different timings according to a fixed schedule time.
ð Insured and V.P. do not Post here.
ð Closed on Sundays and Postal Holidays.
ð The Mobile Post Offices sell stamps and Postal stationery, grant certificate of posting, book surface and air mail registered articles of the letter mail.
ð Air parcels accepting unregistered articles of the letter mail for dispatch.
ð The mobile Post Offices at Madras and Nagpur are also permitted to book money orders.
